A Tiny Shutdown Timer Script (So I Can Finally Sleep)
Sometimes, the smallest tools make the biggest difference. We’ve all been there: a video export has 20 minutes left, a system update is crawling, or a large download is at 90%—and it’s already past midnight. Instead of sitting there waiting or leaving the PC running all night (which is noisy, wasteful, and unsustainable), I built this simple shell script to handle the "night shift" for me.
What this script does for you:
-
Flexible Timer: Schedule your shutdown in either minutes or seconds.
-
Instant Abort: Changed your mind? You can cancel the countdown at any time.
-
Automated Peace of Mind: Perfect for long renders, updates, or any task that finishes while you’re away.
My Workflow: If I see a process needs about 25 more minutes, I start the script with a 30-minute buffer and go to bed. The PC shuts itself down as soon as the timer hits zero. No more staying up late "just in case" and no more wasting energy until morning.
(You can find this in my ‘My Games’ section, where I keep all my small tools and experiments.)
Safety Note: Always save your work before starting the timer! A shutdown will close all open applications. Also, ensure the script has the correct execution permissions for your system.
